No Theater, No Problem: 10 New Movies You Can Watch Right Now From Home

The vast majority of the nation’s movie theaters are now closed and multiple studios are now releasing their films digitally.

If you, like many Americans, are stuck at home right now, bored, or perhaps a little anxious and looking for a way to entertain yourself, Hollywood studios might have a solution for you. 

The vast majority of the nation’s movie theaters are now closed, which has left studios and film distributors with nowhere to release their movies. The openings of several blockbuster films, such as Disney’s Mulan, A Quiet Place: Part II, and the new James Bond film No Time to Die have been postponed, but multiple studios are now breaking the tradition of pushing new movies into theaters and instead opting to release other films digitally, through streaming platforms or video-on-demand services.

So if you’re looking for something to watch, here’s a sampling of what the studios have already released digitally as of Tuesday:

Onward

The Disney Pixar animated film Onward, starring Chris Pratt and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, is now available for digital purchase for $19.99, just two short weeks after it was released into theaters on March 6. According to the Internet Movie Database (IMDB), Onward is about “two teenage elf brothers embark on a quest to discover if there is still magic out there” in their “suburban fantasy world.”

Onward is available on various platforms, including iTunes, Google Play, and Amazon Prime. It will begin streaming on Disney+ on April 3.

The Invisible Man

Horror flick The Invisible Man received rave reviews upon its Feb. 28 release and is now available for rental for $19.99. The film stars Elizabeth Moss as Cecila. IMDB describes the movie as follows: “When Cecilia’s abusive ex takes his own life and leaves her his fortune, she suspects his death was a hoax. As a series of coincidences turn lethal, Cecilia works to prove that she is being hunted by someone nobody can see.”

The Invisible Man can be rented on Apple TV, Amazon Prime, Google Play, and YouTube. 

Frozen 2

The animated sequel to the beloved 2013 Disney film was released onto Disney+ last week, three months earlier than scheduled. 

According to IMDB, the sequel follows Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, Olaf, and Sven as they “leave Arendelle to travel to an ancient, autumn-bound forest of an enchanted land. They set out to find the origin of Elsa’s powers in order to save their kingdom.”

The film can also be rented for $4.99 on Amazon Prime, YouTube, Vudu, and other platforms.

EMMA.

The newest Jane Austen adaptation is now available on video on demand as well. Set in 1800s England, the dramedy follows Emma Woodhouse, “a well meaning but selfish young woman [who] meddles in the love lives of her friends.”

Emma is available to digitally rent or buy for $19.99 on a variety of on-demand services and platforms, including Apple TV, Amazon Prime, iTunes, Google Play, and Fandango Now.

The Hunt

The Hunt—which was initially postponed from its original release date of September 2019 after the mass shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio—was released into movie theaters on March 13, right in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic. Now that theaters are shuttered, the film is available to rent on demand for $19.99. 

While the film itself has received middling reviews, there’s another element of its history that is noteworthy: The film’s delayed release was also caused in part by President Trump’s criticism of its premise, as the satirical thriller tells the story of a group of “globalist elites” killing people for sport. 

The Hunt is available on a wide variety of on-demand services, including iTunes, Google Play, Amazon Prime, and FandangoNow.

Birds of Prey

The Suicide Squad spinoff starring Margot Robbie spent a little over a month in theaters and is available for purchase on digital platforms starting Tuesday.

Here’s IMDB’s synopsis of the film: “After splitting with the Joker, Harley Quinn joins superheroes Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya to save a young girl from an evil crime lord.

Birds of Prey is available for purchase for $19.99 on AppleTV, Amazon Prime, FandangoNow, and several other platforms.

Bloodshot

The Vin Diesel-starring superhero flick will be available for purchase Tuesday as well, less than two weeks after it first appeared in theaters. 

The film’s official synopsis is as follows: “Based on the bestselling comic book, Vin Diesel stars as Ray Garrison, a soldier recently killed in action and brought back to life as the superhero Bloodshot by the RST corporation. With an army of nanotechnology in his veins, he’s an unstoppable force, stronger than ever and able to heal instantly. But in controlling his body, the company has sway over his mind and memories, too. Now, Ray doesn’t know what’s real and what’s not—but he’s on a mission to find out.”

Bloodshot is available for purchase on Amazon, iTunes, Vudu, Google Play, and YouTube for $19.99.

The Way Back

Starring Ben Affleck, this drama tells the story of a former star basketball player who returns to coach his old high school team while navigating his issues with substance abuse. 

The Way Back is available to purchase for $19.99 on Amazon Prime, Google Play, FandangoNow, and other platforms.

Just Mercy

This based-on-a-true-story legal drama was released in December and landed on video on demand Tuesday. Starring Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Foxx, the film follows civil rights defense attorney Bryan Stevenson as he works to free an innocent prisoner from death row.

Just Mercy is available to rent for $5.99 or buy for $19.99 across many platforms, including Amazon Prime, iTunes, and Google Play.

The Gentlemen

The action-comedy flick starring Mathew McConaughey and Charlie Hunnam also arrives on demand Tuesday. 

Per the IMDB synopsis of the film: “An American expat tries to sell off his highly profitable marijuana empire in London, triggering plots, schemes, bribery and blackmail in an attempt to steal his domain out from under him.”

The Gentlemen is available to buy for $14.99 on iTunes, Google Play, Amazon Prime, and FandangoNow.
