One word, so many emotions. This video explores a word that encompasses many emotions at once, for Latinos, and all the meanings the word ‘gringo’ has.
Is there a single word among Spanish-speakers that can be used to describe someone’s appearance, fashion sense, ethnicity, and immigration status? Plus, can the same word be used as an insult, or be entirely inoffensive, while also describing food?
Yes: gringo.
In the first part of this video, we look at a couple of theories as to the origin of the word, which some believe came from the Old World, while others believe it was homegrown in current-day America, but used to be part of Mexico.
In the second part of the video, we’ll explore the current use of the word, including its various connotations.
