After months since she was first reported missing, her family and friends will finally be able to bury the 20-year-old soldier.
A public memorial for Spc. Vanessa Guillén was held today in Houston at her alma mater, Chavez High School. A private burial is scheduled for tomorrow.
The day-long event began on Friday with a veterans cruise procession to the high school auditorium. The service included prayers, testimonials, and live music. The Guillén family is also scheduled to speak before the event ends at 8 p.m.
Vanessa’s casket, which featured the Mexican and American flag on it and her name, was donated by a local Houston company.
Her family posted on social media that her memorial would not proceed with any other agenda but would focus on honoring the 20-year-old.

“Chavez High School is where Vanessa played soccer, track, cross country, and graduated top 15% in 2018,” the social media post said. “Friday will not be a day about justice or about our military reform, it will be about Vanessa Guillen. Friday will be the day of honoring, remembering, cheering, praying, and respecting (the) beautiful life God gave her.”
