Biden criticized Trump’s treatment of Puerto Rico and its people, saying he will address the political status of the island.

Joe Biden unveiled his plan for Puerto Rico during a campaign visit to Florida.

The Democratic candidate began to announce his plan by emphasizing that Puerto Ricans deserve fair treatment whether they live in the United States or in Puerto Rico.

“Whether you live in Reading, Pennsylvania; Kissimmee, Florida; or San Juan, Puerto Rico; you deserve a fair return for your work, an equal chance to get ahead, and a government that treats every American citizen equally and has your back when you get knocked down,” Biden said in a written statement.

The former vice president lashed out against President Donald Trump’s treatment of the island, assuring “he has made things worse.”

The statement says that the president failed to deliver the necessary emergency supplies to the island after Hurricane Maria, and instead suggested that Puerto Rico should be sold or traded

“In the midst of the coronavirus, [Trump] has again failed to provide Puerto Ricans with the support they need,” Biden’s statement also says.

Biden addressed Puerto Rico’s political status by stating that moving forward to a future of respect is not possible without addressing the matter.

The statement was released on Tuesday before the candidate participated in a Hispanic Heritage Month celebration in Kissimmee, Florida.

Biden promised to create a federal work group for Puerto Rico, which will report directly to him if he is elected, to make sure the island has the resources and technical assistance it needs to recover and prosper.

These are the points Biden highlighted within his plan for the island:

  • Support for a full recovery and reconstruction of the infrastructure to modern standards.
  • Investment in Puerto Rico’s future through economic development initiatives and support for families.
  • Provide relief from unsustainable debt.
  • Expand access to education and workforce development.
