Latino Democrats on the President’s Refusal To Approve COVID Relief: “Trump Doesn’t Care”

“President Trump is just giving up on the American people by ending negotiations,” Latino Democrats say. 

President Donald Trump is sending mixed messages about COVID-19 financial relief via Twitter. One minute he is tweeting about halting all talks regarding the approval of another stimulus relief check to Americans, and the next, it seems as though it is back on. Either way, Latino Democrats are over Trump’s chaotic back-and-forth.

“Families are suffering immensely in Chicago and around the country,” Rep. Chuy García (D-Illinois) tweeted. “House Democrats have passed bill after bill to help Americans recover from #COVID19 including the revised #HeroesAct just last week. Trump doesn’t care. This is not leadership. This is cowardice.”

García’s frustrated tweet comes after Trump first issued a tweet saying that he ended all negotiations between the Democrats and Republicans regarding the second stimulus relief fund. Trump said he would resume negotiations after he won the presidential election. 

“‘Democrat States’ is code for Trump’s view of our country and this crisis,” tweeted Rep. Verónica Escobar (D-Texas). “He wants to punish states he views as adversaries & reward states he sees as allies. This warped, perverse view prevents him from understanding that ALL Americans need help. People are dying.”

Rep. Linda Sánchez (D-Calif.) agreed with her fellow Latino Democrats tweeting, “People are losing jobs. Families could lose homes. Businesses are failing. The virus isn’t going away. House Democrats have passed bills to get real relief to those who are struggling. Thanks to President Trump, we have nothing. Was this a chapter in ‘The Art of the Deal’?”

Hours after his initial tweet that even sent the stock market into a nosedive, the president then tweeted that he would approve a standalone bill for a stimulus check after all, which is what Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-California) had asked for last week. 

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York) said that the president isn’t in the proper health condition to be making any decision that would have a devastating effect on millions. 

“I don’t think that we should be making any large political decisions when the president is in such a perilous medical state,” Rep. Ocasio-Cortez said on the MSNBC. “He is still receiving interventions and treatments, and we’re in the middle of talking about and making dramatic decisions about…COVID stimulus.”

Rep. Nydia Velázquez (D-New York) tweeted a list of programs that would be affected if Trump doesn’t approve a stimulus package, including unemployment benefits, food assistance, rent relief, small business aid, education funding, and COVID testing. 

“That is what Trump is walking away from by saying he no longer wants to make a deal,” Rep. Velázquez said. “He’s abandoning the American people at a time of unprecedented need.”
