Many pandemic-era food programs have expired at a time when families are dealing with higher food prices.

During the pandemic, thousands of Florida children received free meals at schools through the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture).

But many of those programs have expired and now families are dealing with higher grocery, housing, and gas prices

For that reason, the USDA has released new guidelines to determine who is eligible to participate in free or reduced-price school meal programs.

Under the new requirements, a child in a family of four with a yearly income of $51,338 or less would qualify for reduced-price meals. That threshold is nearly $3,000 higher than last year’s.

Families that believe their income is under the limit should fill out an application for free or reduced-price meals through their school.

For more information about food programs, you can reach USDA’s National Hunger Hotline at 1-866-3-HUNGRY (for English) or 1-877-8-HAMBRE (for Spanish).
