Joy Goff-Marcil, Democratic state Senate candidate for District 10, and Rep. Carlos G. Smith are among the Democrats asking why DeSantis’ electoral police are not investigating the case.

A group of voters and Democrats is calling for Florida Sen. Jason Brodeur to resign and drop out from his race for re-election because of possible involvement in a voting and campaign fraud scheme.

His challenger, Joy Goff-Marcil, Democratic state Senate candidate for District 10, Rep. Carlos G. Smith (D-49), and other voters protested outside Brodeur’s office, last Thursday.

According to their claims, Brodeur won his seat in 2020 with help from a ghost candidate.

“Whether his failings are criminal or moral, he should not be representing this community,” Goff-Marcil said during the protest.

Ben Paris, Brodeur’s former employee and Seminole County GOP party chairman, was found guilty on Sept. 1 of a misdemeanor campaign finance violation that prosecutors say was part of a larger scheme to siphon off votes from a Democrat in a state senate race.

Former Seminole County Tax Collector Joel Greenberg said in sworn testimony that  Brodeur “absolutely” knew about the scheme.

The group of protestors is also demanding a state investigation.

“Why isn’t Gov. Ron DeSantis and his election police looking into this?” Smith asked.

In April, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed into law a bill to create a police force dedicated to investigating voter fraud and other election crimes.

The governor spent nearly $6 million to create a 52-member force, which has been criticized and questioned since it is not clear what crimes it will investigate and how it will operate.

The board of the Seminole County Chamber of Commerce, where Brodeur was president, also announced that it will conduct an extensive review of its operations, its involvement in politics, and the senator’s tenure.
