About Courier Newsroom
Floricua is owned and operated by Courier Newsroom, a civic media company with eight state-based newsrooms. Our mission is to protect and strengthen our democracy through credible, fact-based journalism that seeks to create a more informed, engaged, and representative America.
We reach audiences who are not regularly engaging with civic information, and who are unlikely to subscribe to paywalled journalism. As part of that effort, we deliver much of our reporting on the social platforms our readers use most frequently.
Courier’s newsrooms practice independent, point-of-view journalism. You can read about Floricua’s values in the statement below. The managing editor of each site, in addition to Courier Newsroom’s VP of Content, has sole discretion and control over the editorial process.
Courier Newsroom is a public benefit corporation owned by Good Information Inc., and is supported by reader contributions, sponsors, philanthropic donations, and corporate underwriting. We maintain an editorial firewall between our newsrooms and underwriters, sponsors, and donors. We do not accept funding from any national or state political party, party committee, candidate, or campaign.
See Courier’s website for additional information about our national team and our funding model.

Contributions or gifts in support of Floricua’s journalism are not tax deductible as charitable contributions.
Floricua is part of the Courier Newsroom network. All payments will be made to Courier Newsroom.
Floricua: Here’s Where We’re Coming From
¡Saludos, mi gente! Floricua is a civic media newsroom by and for Puerto Rican women in the island and, of course, Florida. Our journalists write about nuestra comunidad unlike any other media organization—we give you the news “en arroz con habichuelas.” While other outlets focus on the big headlines, we aim to bring you quality, fact-based local reporting that’s not only digestible, but also informative pa’ ti y los tuyos.
When reporting about the relationship between the US and PR, context and understanding history makes all the difference. We bring that first-hand experience and expertise that US media outlets often ignore. We will never talk about Boricuas; rather, we will always talk with you to ensure our community’s voices and experiences are centered in our coverage.
At Floricua, we believe in journalism that strengthens our communities, and will always aim to spotlight efforts to rebuild struggling economies, expand access to health care and child care, and reduce inequality in all forms. Voting rights are an especially important issue for us, as we believe civically engaged Boricuas are essential for a strong democracy.
Our goal is to deliver the news through solutions and service-based journalism. As watchdogs of elected officials and government bodies, our journalists report on the effectiveness of public programs, how taxes are invested in our communities, and how our readers can make our government work for them. After all, that’s why we left la Isla del Encanto.
We believe it is our duty to hold public servants accountable when they breach our trust; we will also champion the work of people in power when they do good work for our communities.
Algo que debes tener claro: When US media quickly moves on from a big story happening on the island—see the devastation left by Hurricane Maria as one example—we will always stay behind to tell the stories of our people.
Our hope is that, in our journalistic work, you find a news outlet you can trust and engage with. GRACIAS for being here and supporting our journey.
